Who is to blame? The Hmong.

Hmong must take a share of the blame because there are many Hmong Americans, children of the immigrants brought to the US by the CIA after the Vietnam War, who know how but fail to get politically involved. Perhaps they leave such matters up to their elders in mistaken filial piety, or perhaps they feel everything that can be done already has been tried fruitlessly. Nomatter, young Hmong need to exert themselves by educating themselves, speaking with others, registering to vote, and writing letters to their political representatives. Don't cast blame if you haven't done anything yourself to help. Some elders are to blame for squabbling amongst themselves over recognition, pride, control, and money. The rest of the world wants to know, "are the Hmong united in caring about their people in Laos and Thailand? because if you don't, why should the rest of us step in?" Now is the time to show America and the world the Hmong are one people who want to save the Hmongs who suffer in the jungles of Laos.

Any large population of people will contain splinter fractions, such as the pro-Laotian/communist group that says the Hmong in the jungles are just bandits and the pro-war/independence group that wish the Hmong had their own country. However these groups comprise a tiny fraction of the Hmong community. Hmong-Americans know about the past and ongoing horrors in Laos, from the stories of their tight-lipped parents or from seeing one of the heart-wrenching documentaries such as Hunted Like Animals. But seriously, no one really wants to get on a plane and go fight against the Laotian soldiers to try to carve a Hmong country out of Laos, despite the ridiculous news story that the California Highway Patrol was a training ground for Hmong soldiers! Obviously American-born Hmong would rather chat online, go to the mall, go fishing, or play video games like any other American youth. The Hmong Americans are neither communists nor revolutionaries; they are peaceful people who have a country and love it: the USA.
